Carolinas' Nature Photographers Association

We just returned home from the most spectacular and well-run Photography Conference we've ever had the pleasure of attending. The Audio-Visual equipment was superb, with four screens placed across the front of the auditorium where four exquisitely calibrated digital projectors displayed our work, and others

In contrast to some venues, the CNPA conference highlights only a few photographers' work. Mary and I gave seven programs, beginning with my half-day seminar on flash and triggering devices (image from our pdf, below)

The following day the conference formally began, kicked off with our Keynote address, Seven Tails - the Quest to Photograph all Seven of the World's Big Cats. This was followed, over the next three days, with our programs on Manual Mode/Spot Metering; TTL Flash; Composition; RAW Conversion; Adventures in the Bush (not the title); and Packing for Trips.

We shared the venue with David Fitzsimmons, who did a half-day session that included lecture and the shooting of small animals - based on his great children's books (Curious Creatures), and his programs on photographing waterfalls and pro skills for wildlife photography. Art Wolfe did a 'surgical strike' appearance, arriving and leaving within 24 hours and wowing the crowd with his latest version of Earth is my Witness. Art did this program at NANPA last year, and with the new updates it seemed totally new, and equally impressive. Everyone loved it.

There are a couple of regional camera conferences around the country, and Mary and I will be doing another one this summer, but I can honestly say that if you live in the southeast US, or wish to travel here to attend their annual conference, I would highly recommend it. If you're a pro or serious photographer and approached to participate and give a lecture or talk, do it -- everything was first class and a real joy.

We squeezed participating in this conference between two trips -- we had just returned from Kenya and Tanzania (trip report will be out soon) and two days after we returned home we were off to India for a tiger photo safari. Luckily the weather cooperated for all of us -- Art made his flights, and we had clear weather for our drive to and from Spartanburg, S.C.

We look forward to returning at a later date with a whole set of new programs. We can't wait!
